The collector mentality affects people differently, Ken. Some enjoy the
hunt, others enjoy the repair/use, and some others just absolutely MUST
have one at any cost - regardless - to impress buddies or otherwise be
somebody I guess? Dunno. I'm sure I've picked up items over the years that
would leave others scratching their noggins and saying "he paid money for
THAT??".

My buddy Joe has owned three SX-88s. The first he paid a lot of money for
back during the big feeding frenzy. He wasn't impressed with performance,
sold it (at a loss) and bought another for half as much(still too much
IMO), and got the same results. He's hoping the $350 version will be better
since he's torn it down completely and discovered a lot of bad components
that were otherwise-hidden in the other examples. To me, it's an
interesting receiver but I can't see spending more than $500 for a nice
example. Or a 75A-4, for that matter, and I love the one I have now.

I respect and sometimes envy those who have the apparently bottomless bank
account and can buy whatever piece of gear they want, whenever they want.
Who among us wouldn't do exactly the same if we could? OTOH, growing up
poor not only gave me a deep appreciation for a dollar, it also made me
very resourceful. That resourcefulness has not just paid off in finds many
times over, it's been a source of enjoyment and entertainment through the
years. Like digging around for old 20s-30s tubes by an old shack and
bringing home several Atlantic Richfield glass domes from old gas pumps. Or
the early Onan flathead 2 cylinder 3KW generator with cast iron radiator
for $25 from a guy who sold me old wooden sets. Didn't need 'em and sure
wasn't looking for them, but boy, are they neat!

BTW, SX-28 - Best Halli receiver ever, in my view. Decent quality, sounds
great, and looks like a radio should. SX-73 might be second.
