One correction to the photos: that wouldn't be an RBK ( vhf ) that they were using to copy Fox. More likely some model of shortwave Hallicrafters I don't want  to take a guess at.
Also, the site where the Ecophones were being used was a USAAF school.

I'm not going to say that didn't happen, but most code practice wasn't even over a radio.  That said, even the school for black sailors used better stuff than that for training on live broadcasts:
