I know you're right. They used multiple code playback machines and audio wiring. However, I do somewhere have a photo or two
showing Ecophones being used in code practice school setup.

I'm not going to say that didn't happen, but most code practice wasn't even over a radio.  That said, even the school for black sailors used better stuff than that for training on live broadcasts:
