You are spot on, Mike. I have noticed the same thing. I've been on
the air since 1953 and things are getting worse. It truly was a
gentleman's hobby back then. Just go to hamfests and see how people
dress today. I have sent things to hams and they don't even give you a
"Thank You" when the receive it. I've even noticed this with some
prominent hams. I dropped being a member of one local club for more
then one reason, but one of the reasons was how the club treated a
window of a former member on his equipment. Listen in on some of their
conversations on the air. That will tell you a lot of their makeup
too. I'm amazed at how cheap some people are. Like when they beg on
one of these lists for one simple resistor. When I need a resistor, I
buy 100 of them. However, I no longer help others out as I once did.
I'll never forget the time I was talking on the air to a neighbor.
Another ham neighbor who is a multimillionaire was listening in to the
conversation. I needed a SO-239 and had just run out of them. My buddy
and I helped each other out under these circumstances. The third
neighbor broke in and said he had some. Then he proceeded to talk out
load saying, "let's see, I payed $1.25 each for them. I'll let you
have one for $2.50!" All along I had been giving him tubes as he needed
them for free and what did he do with them? He put them in radios he
sold for an enormous profit. This guy was an airline pilot flying to
Japan as Captain. I've got plenty other stories to tell like this. Same
goes for giving someone some good advice in depth on one of these
lists. You are lucky to get a thank you for doing so. So what do I do
today? I keep my mouth shut and don't freely help others out as I once
did. I make exceptions, but they are rare. Then too look at the greed
on Ebay with many sellers. All this is disgusting.
