Ray:

In my experience, commonly-used Ge diodes very seldom have PRV ratings much above 90
VDC. The 1N914 has a PRV rating of 100 V peak repetitive, and 75 V "working".

The 1N34 Ge diode, which was used for many, many switching applications has a PRV
rating of 45 V. The 1N60 is rated at 100 PRV.

Although the 1N92 is rated at 200 PRV while the 1N93 is rated at 300 PRV, every other Ge
diode in my list is rated 100 V or below.

In any case, most standard Si rectifier diodes easily equal or exceed the switching speeds
of almost all of the old Ge diodes so if the 1N914 doesn't work in your application, go to a
1N4001.

As someone else mentioned, Schottky diodes are even better, and most of their PR voltage
ratings equal or exceed 90 V.

If you have documentation on your counter, doesn't it tell you what voltage is used for
switching?

If I were in your shoes, I would replace those weak Ge diodes with 1N914s. They are cheap
and easily replaced if they fail, but I'll bet they won't.
