Hi

If it is like the “usual circuits” the diodes are handling < 30V switching signals. The matching 
diode to diode is not as big a deal as leakage. Germanium was not a superstar in that respect. 
Going to a rectifier diode likely will get you in trouble with capacitance. A 914 or 4148 is a 
reasonable choice. If it does not work, try something else …

I would swap out one entire stage and see what happens.
