I put flat pile carpeting in the "museum-operating area" of my basement
and while it looks nice and it easy on the feet, things like desk/table
legs and casters do settle in and leave "dents". Fortunately there's no
mastic just double-sticky tape, although I'd need to invent an
anti-gravity machine to even thing about replacing it with tile, which
would be my choice if I were doing it over again.

The floors in the shop-storage areas are concrete, which works fine and
can be painted using the modern materials to provide a very nice
appearance if desired.   But since I prefer "standing" benches I added
some anti-fatigue mats on the floor, which are basically 1/2" thick
rubber mats with about 1" diameter holes throughout.   They do make it
more comfortable to stand for long periods of time, but have another
side-benefit - the holes tend to catch a lot of dropped objects (like
that odd thread screw you don't have any spares of) so they don't bounce
or roll off into the 4th dimension.   I've even had tubes survive the
drop to the floor, which would never happen with bare concrete.

Back in the 70s there was kind of a trend to put that type of carpet on
benchtops and I did so at one location.  It actually worked out quite
well, and I'd do it again,  especially on a bench where things with nice
cabinets and panels were being handled. Definitely not a good choice for
wood or metalworking!
