I followed the common fashion of the early 70s TV and HiFi shops and  
put down low pile carpet without pad in my sound room/shop. It's getting 
really yucky now, and is a pain to find dropped items on.  The carpet 
was laid with mastic, so taking it up and cleaning the mastic off the 
floor is  time consuming but not terribly hard to do. However, because 
the room is so full, it will have to be done in sections. The floor 
under the carpet is hardwood in reasonable condition, so once it's 
cleaned up it should look alright and be far easier to keep clean- and 
find dropped items.
