This is done in Amsterdam because those houses are VERY narrow; so narrow that
in some cases it is hard to squeeze yourself by the staircases. The only way to
get furniture in and out is via the hoisting arrangement.
Another interesting thing is how some areas are all tilted over! If one end
ever fell it could be a domino effect. Under those situations I'd hate to have
a lot of boatanchors up high, that certainly wouldn't help the structural
integrity. Speaking of which, making a shop for heavy gear in an attic should
be done with caution if you plan on bringing up significant weight.
