That's an interesting idea! You can find newer, working carbon buttons but it looks like in a T-17 body they'd still suffer from limited sound coupling thru those 3 tiny holes. A booster might be all they'd need to get good output level (without shouting) & retain the old carbon mike 'sound.'

I wonder if this would work for a carbon mic booster. Single transistor; base AC grounded, with bias thru resistor from collector; carbon mic from emitter to ground.
Collector to microphone hot wire. Transistor is fine with 1.5-3 volts mic supply. Amplification is low due to low collector load – microphone transformer – but possibly
enough for a usable output boost. Only “advantage” is original carbon element stays in place. And, maybe you actually like “telephone voice sound”.
