The book 'Evolution of Naval Radio-Electronics.....' states the RU-GF dates
to 1931-1933, no explanation for the years range,
but in comparing it to the type ME ( 1929 ) which came before, it was
certainly modern - the opposite of the way we regard
it now. The ME was a CW-only rec-trans with a 4 tube regenerative receiver
for 3000-4000 kHz and definitely looks 1920s.
This book explains that MD and ME were the first to explore HF for aircraft,
after problems with ignition noise, which had
formerly discouraged the Navy from consider aircraft HF, were solved. I
think the Navy catalog only shows, oddly, the type
MB, which was very similar to the MD-ME except covering only something like
540-950 kHz.
