[Milsurplus] DDS modulator

Has anyone made a simple modulator for one of the DDS signal generators?  I am thinking of a simple resistive adder into the base of a 2N2222 to another 2N2222 emitter follower for a low Z output (50 Ohms) for the emitter R.  400 and 1000 Hz Osc. For the modulation.  Would be using it for basic IF and low freq. RF alignment.  What do you think of this for a very small generator for small workbenches?
