Zeroes???  Zeroes???  I'll have you know that in my Navy on my boat the officers were referred to by the great unwashed masses with respect and affection as "O-gangers".  (I did refer to one of my XOs as "the X sub-zero" even though I really liked and respected the guy.)

Of course, Robert, you were in the USN many many years before I.  Doubtless, you were not blessed with the later improved and...dare I say...perfected models.

In all seriousness...the **main** advantage to being in the submarine service was the much more informal relationships between all levels of ranks.  USN regulations for submarines even require that all eat the same food from the same mess...no separate officer's mess as found on almost other ships is allowed.  But officers still have to pay for their meals.

But then...when conditions required it...everything would fall into place and chains of command worked as the books required.  I loved the small-unit Navy (even a ballistic missile submarine qualifies)...and rather disliked a large command like the aircraft carrier (USS Intrepid, CVS-11) that I was on in 1971.
