Are you quite sure the summer static levels on 600 meters are all that low?

Picking up a weak carrier on 600m is one thing; getting a usable bearing is another.
Since the noise level only affects the receiving site, the experiment i outlined is practical for you. If the carrier from that experiment actually

reaches out, you should get some response somewhere from one those LF DX hounds. You could even put the Hallicrafters on a beacon keyer,

so that the receiver continually “transmitted”.

The personal fear factor only weighs in on this, in so far as fear reinforced this theory. Fear doesn’t compute numerically in this, though.

( Which makes me curious how far ammo ships were kept from others in a convoy. I’ll have to try to look that up. The only sinkings of an

ammo ship i’m familiar with is a couple that were at anchor at a Pacific island base – Ulithi ? And then there were those gas-warfare loaded

vessels blown up at port in Italy. Oh yeah, one blew up at Pittsburgh CA during the war also. The mostly black stevedore crews, IIR, refused

to return to work unless better safety measures were taken. And were punished for that. )

Rolly Michaelis – a ship’s electrician – told me on one voyage he sailed an ammo ship to the Pacific war zone. He said the ammo ship sailed

alone, not in convoy, but out of the usual shipping routes, a more more northernly route. )

Just for fun, i added 2182 ( calling and distress ) + 455 kHz IF offset for rec oscillator = 2737 which is 1 kHz off the 2738 channel ship channel.

Didn’t seem to be a problem back in the day. Even in close proximity of fishing boats.

>Doesn't count unless you first EMP all the noise generators in your neighborhood.

I still maintain 1942 mid-Atlantic was pretty damn quiet - and a regen DF rcvr could be pretty damn sensitive to teeny little electromagnetic waves.

Oh yeah, if you're in a freighter full of explosives will you still bet no one can hear you?
