It might be an example but if so, far from perfect. For one thing,
AN/GRC-14 was ordered by USN and AN/GRC-19 was ordered by USA. For another,
AN/GRC-14 was ordered first. Disregard the sequence of component nomenclature.
Those weren't assigned until after prototype hardware was either built or
being built. Consider AN/VRC-12. Original order was placed around 1948 but a
set meeting the order requirements wasn't technically feasible that early.
First near-production hardware with assibned nomenclature appeared in the
mid 1960's, more than fifteen years later.
Although the transmitter part of AN/GRC-14 is seriously over weight, the
same isn't true of the receiver. One R-808 is equivalent to one R-392 plus
one CV-278/GR. Since the R-808 is narrower than the R-392 and the CV-278 is
the same size as the R-392, with converter the receive part of AN/VRC-29
takes up more than twice the space. Now that all being said, I won't argue that
the GRC-14 was the better set performance wise. But that's a totally
different subject.
