[Milsurplus] voice tubes

Hi,
On the destroyer escort the engine panel had the dials you describe and
right under those a tachometer readout for the starboard shaft. The
port side engine control was further aft in another space. For backing,
the engines stopped and were restarted turning the other way. When we
were underway there wasn't much activity besides staying awake and
paying attention. Going in or out of harbors and especially docking got
fairly busy at that panel.
There were sound powered phones at my battle station (not in the engine
rooms) and no sound tubes. The ship was WWII vintage and about 25 years
old when I joined the crew. My normal duty on that ship was operation of
the evap plant to make make sea water into fresh water (magic) and keep
watch on one of the generators in that same space whenever it was needed
and one of fire pumps.
