Bruce:

Sound tubes aboard ships were mainly in ops areas above the main 
deck. (Bridge, CIC, Radio, Chart room, Signal Bridge, CO Sea cabin, 
CO and XO staterooms)
These areas were not generally noisy.   I know of no sound tubes in 
engineering areas.  Other than noise there would be losses due to distance.

What was used all over, including engineering areas, was the 
venerable Sound Powered phones.  But noisy engine areas still cause a lot of
noise problems so down there you will find "insulated phone booths" 
so to speak, where "snipes" would be able to hear and also keep most 
noise out of the
phone system.

Modern ships do not generally use sound tubes these days.
