Vishay was started by Dr. Felix Zandman 50 years ago as a manufacturer
of foil resistors and strain gages and has now grown so large that these
initial products were considered "non-core" businesses and spun-off as
Vishay Precision Group in 2010. My first job was working for a fellow
named George Risk, who'd started Dale Electronics in Columbus Nebraska
in 1951 making precision wirewound resistors, and (disastrously) merged
it with the Lionel (train) Company in the late 50s. Dale survived as
one of the few viable Lionel businesses until becoming Vishay's first
acquisition in 1985. Since then Vishay has acquired Sprague, Vitramon,
Siliconix and numerous companies and product lines. These brands are
more recognizable to most of us than Vishay Intertechnology, but it's a
company that is committed to passives and increasingly, discrete
semiconductors - including many devices for mil/aerospace applications.
