They would at least need to know how to find somebody who knows what the equipment is. It's harder for potential buyers to find the items (and thus, for the kids to get a fair value) if the item isn't described well. I've gotten a few odd things nearly for free because they were too poorly described to be found in a targeted search for them, and I just happened to stumble on them by mistake while looking for something else. Nobody else who might have wanted the items happened to stumble on them, so I got them for next to nothing. Good for me, but not good for the seller.

They also need to know how to find somebody who knows how to properly package boatanchors.

If you have trusted friends who understand your stuff and are likely to outlive you, then it would probably help to tell the kids to contact them for help if they need to liquidate your stuff. I think it wouldn't hurt to put tags on major items containing at least a good description of what the item is, suitable for use as an eBay listing title. Also, try to store related stuff together to increase the chances of accessories staying with their major components, or at lease getting listed at about the same time so that potential buyers can find them together.

Cool! It's great to be able to share interests with kids/parents.
