But until the tanks were replaced with material that had to come all the 
way from the west coast and then filled with oil that had to come in 
many many tankers also from the west coast all while Japanese fleets and 
submarines had free run in the Pacific
Pearl would be totally useless for a year or more ,freeing up the 
Japanese to cause much more harm.   We might well have lost the islands 
to them.
