It is indeed.  I forgot to mention that it is also one way to bring back 
partially cemented carbon mikes if they are not completely gone.  The 
extra gain can sometimes make the difference.  It does require providing 
a microphone current into the carbon mic and an isolating capacitor so 
you won't damage the input transformer, but that's an easy outboard 
modification.
