Joe,

The Marine Corps should have bought the R-392 instead but having said
that I have to report that I have been using an 808 paired with my ATC
for several years now on 160, 75 & 40M with very good results. Seems
to work better off an external regulated 28 vdc source than with the
internal DC supply. Quirky front panel controls, RF gain control
works backwards in one of the operating mode settings and has several
quite useable selectivity settings but none labeled in kHZ as a couple
of examples. Very poor performance on SSB, more BFO injection might
help. Larger and heavier than the R392. Have heard reports of poor
10M performance but haven't used it up there myself. Same hard to
find power connector as used the R392. Dial scale calibration
includes 160M even though this band is below the frequency range of
the set according to the specs (Ham on the design team maybe?) Mine
was a freebie so I don't really have much room for complaint. :^)

Try your antenna on both the High and Low Z terminals and leave it on
the one that seems to work best.
