When I was in tec school we had to build a "relaxation oscillator" useing two NE-51's.The really cool thing was when our teacher explained and demonstrated the "plasma" state of the gas tube by applying several hundred volts to the lamp.Nice bright purple color for neon.Dangerous in that it gets hot and has potential to explode.Probably illeagle to do that in school now.

've been told that almost any device such as neon lamps
ill oscillate in the RF region if the applied voltage puts them
nto what's called Negative Resistance. Some years ago one
f the ham magazines had a article about using VR-105's
nd VR-150's for noise generators. That's back when we
id our own VHF receiver alignment. NE-51's also work.
e've used NE-51's for interstage coupling on digital circuits.
91's are just bigger and older.
