I think the AN/ARC-60 uses a two neon lamp oscillator for the "whistle through" function to set the receiver to the transmitter frequency when useing the UHF transverter.(IMSM).

When I was in tec school we had to build a "relaxation oscillator" useing two
E-51's.The really cool thing was when our teacher explained and demonstrated
he "plasma" state of the gas tube by applying several hundred volts to the
amp.Nice bright purple color for neon.Dangerous in that it gets hot and has
otential to explode.Probably illeagle to do that in school now.

ve been told that almost any device such as neon lamps
ll oscillate in the RF region if the applied voltage puts them
to what's called Negative Resistance. Some years ago one
the ham magazines had a article about using VR-105's
d VR-150's for noise generators. That's back when we
d our own VHF receiver alignment. NE-51's also work.
've used NE-51's for interstage coupling on digital circuits.
1's are just bigger and older.
