Welcome to the milsurplus gang, Gene.  (I suspect your term "newbie" is not
really accurate.)

The topics here swing in all directions, with technical and historical
discussions of gear from *all* eras being popular.  Many of us would like
to read more frequent traffic and discussion on the list, so if you've got
some stories about the gear you used, we'd all be interested.  I've always
had some interest in the use of the AN/TRC-8, which has been on the surplus
market for 50 years, all units seemingly in new unused condition.
