It certainly wasn't my intention to imply that you did, John.
Apologies if you took it that way. More to the point, the interest
spurs the collecting, and that interest has to be cultivated
somewhere, somehow. Therein lies the opportunity. Not a case of right
or wrong, simply showing the path to a better way. Hey - it worked on
me when I was 18, and I knew everything there was to know. Just ask my
parents. (o:

It wouldn't surprise me to discover that many of those designers were
also hams. Amateur radio played a much bigger role back then in
leading people into a career in radio and/or electronics. Just look at
the number of amateur receivers and other gear not only pressed into
service at the beginning of WWII, but also those purchased
specifically for military use.
And I couldn't agree more about the shock mounts. Between those and
the aluminum plates that held control boxes, it becomes a never-ending
chase to complete an installation. Then again, I doubt many scrappers
back had any idea that people would actually pay money for this stuff
someday, or that something as simple as a mounting plate could be more
desirable than a radio.
