Here are some interesting (anyway, i think so) tidbit factoids
from the Aleutian islands campaign:

-US had 2 weather / radio stations in Siberia. At end of war,
Navy insisted that stations stay, as they'd assist in occupation
of Japan. However, Russians insisted they leave; stations were
closed Dec. 194 5

-Of the Aleut natives removed by the Japanese from Attu Island,
and interned in Japan, 40% died, result of undernourishment.
( Higher mortality rate than of any allied prisoners in Japan. )

-All US flyers involved in Aleutian Islands campaign who had to
make emergency landings in Siberia were interned along with their
planes. ( USSR was "neutral" toward Japan til last days of war. )
However, the flyers were all allowed to secretly "escape" to Allied
controlled Iran and return home.

Now a question from me: what would US weather reporting stations
in the Aleutian Islands have used for radio equipment? SCR-284 /
BC-654, i suppose?
