This from my wife, Suzanne, who works for Project HOPE:
Mothballed US NAVY Hospital Ship USS CONSOLATION was handed over to Project
HOPE by Eisenhower Administration ca. 1959 and became SS HOPE crewed by
civilians and civilian medical staff.
SS HOPE Made 11 voyages and was later scrapped about 1975.
Ultimately the ship was not cost effective, but Project HOPE continues to
send medical staff and equipment around the world, and provides some medical
staff for current NAVY hospital ships on goodwill missions to places like
the coast of Africa, Post-Tsunami Indonesia.
I'm looking at contacting the owner and finding out where the HOPE
connection is thought to come from.
