I elicited this response from a Western traveller who has
Mercury-walked China in search of China military surplus
and the more rare, actual antique Chinese radios:

I think maybe some confusion here.
Mercury was a major radio factory in China which made consumer products as
well as military pack radios. The Chinese characters on the front panel
have the word "Mercury" as one of them. Just like some of our military
gear has "Motorola" or "RCA" on it. Thus there would be several Mercury
radios with the code names being the second word.
So... "Mercury Hamster" might be a code name just like "Motorola Handie
Talkie."
