There were code names assigned by NATO to communications 
equipment.  Several were Mercury something.
Mercury Grass R-401M VHF Comms
Mercury Plate R-406 Comms
Mercury Tree unknown comms

This is not a complete list but I think the Chinese radios would have 
fit in this group of NATO given code names.  I doubt Mercury was the 
name of the factory.
