like an RAX-1 set, but without more documentation, it's mere speculation.

Reason they came to be was our torpedoes stunk early on.  Contact firing
rod wud buckle, jam, & cause misfire.

So a bright pilot just came up on a merchantman fm behind & dropped his
torpedoes like bombs to great effect.

This is written in a 50s paperback called "Black Catrs of the Pacific"

There's nothing about radios but plenty on operation.  MO for attack was
throttle engines to idle on night stern approach & bomb.  According
to sailor-survivors they were considered holy terrors.  And author
notes PBY4s were considered hopelessly obselete in '42 but we
had the tooling.

Neat deal on ASB radar & how two late-arriving wheeled PB4As went out & 
found Midway invasion fleet after the 40(?) battle fleet search planes 
had gone.  So the ASB actually might have done something.

Also there's a para on Marines going ashore on Guadalcanal or somewhere
& finding a hot SCR-268 clone.
