Considering your QTH, why don't you use one of the WWII Commonwealth 
aircraft microphones, Pete?  That's what the ART-13 dynamic mike 
capability was originally designed to accommodate.  It would bypass what 
I suspect is cementing of the carbon granules in the mike you're using 
and you should have plenty of gain after you switch.
