Hi Hue:

Probably a wire recorder was used for the sound.  I think tape recorders came 
from Germany after W.W. II.  Although it's nice to get a clap stick shot at the 
start of each scene, you can manually sync the sound and picture later.  It's 
done by having a lab make a sound track on 16 mm film and running them both 
through the editing machine, then decoupling the sound from the picture and 
making relative moves.  See the movie "Blow Out" for an example.
