I can't find my TA-2 manual right now, but my RA-1B/I/J manual is labeled "First Edition, November 1938."  That would seem to indicate approximately when the RA-1 was being introduced.

I've always heard of the TA-2 as the companion to the RA-1.  I don't know what else would be more likely.
