Dennis,

I think you have it backwards. Or maybe sideways might be more apt. In my
opinion, given the nomenclature on the nameplate, the unit that was on eBay was
the competing bid for the SCR-284 contact, and the one that lost out.
Contrary to being smaller, the set was larger than the production model BC-654 by
Crosley.

You must have missed it, but the same seller had the box that the radio sat
on for sale as well. It contained the receiver power supply (much larger than
the PE-104 or BA-43), some sort of interconnect panel that the transmitter
supply(s) plugged into, and a large accessory storage compartment. I downloaded
all of the full-size photos from both auctions for the files. Can't post them
here but if you want to see any of them I'll send them to you. I never did
go back and check what the other box sold for.

The Accessory And Receiver Power Supply Chest is not quite as tall as the
radio but has the same footprint. On the ends are leg sockets like those on the
BC-654 and the front of the GN-45 (and most other generators before and
after). They would take the LG-3, LG-13 or those stubby ones made for the BC-474.
Around the bottom of the box are what look like the upper half of a latching
system. Indicating that there may have been a mount for the box as well (for
vehicular use maybe).

The external power input connector on the interconnect panel is the same as
one of the ones on the BC-223-A (same insert as mates with PL-61).

As further support for my conclusion, I'll mention a discussion just
concluded over on Greenkeys concerning the TT-4/TG. Kleinschmidt built the TT-4 up
through TT-4C. But the first edition of the RSGB RTTY Handbook shows a photo of
a Teletype machine with a TT-4 nameplate. Somehow they got a photo of one of
the competing prototypes. The photo is reported as not being in the second
edition.
