For those who live in rural areas:
Back in the 1980s, I was passionately involved
in the 1750 meter band (160-190 KC);
I set some records on the band.
I haven't tried this in years,
and it may no longer be possible with the huge increase
in population and developement, but I had good
success taking a drive out in the country and finding long
"barbed wire" farm fences to use as beverages.
It took some looking, but such drives are nice anyway.
I'd find a long multi-strander that didn't have an
AC power line running over it
(across it was OK, just not on the same line).
The longer, the better. Direction did matter, but
not as much as one would think.
Ran a wire to a long screwdriver for a makeshift "ground,"
and a clip-lead to my car-battery-operated Icom R-70.
One or more of the strands was almost always "hot,"
some more than others, of course.
I was able to copy Lowfers from all over the country
while visiting in rural Louisiana.
Despite what one would think, I even found one
"metal fence post" strand that worked, but not
as well as one with wooden fence posts, of course.
