Appreciate the words of encouragement. I perfectly understand about loops,
so, as I said, that is not the problem. The problem is getting one of those
"Getting Around to it" buttons, HI. Digging out any of the RBA, RAK series
receivers would probably even take a few years longer. You have seen the
basement a lot of times. I am doomed to failure at this point. -

A serviceable loop can be pretty simple, like a piece of multi-conductor 
shielded cable with the conductors wired in series and made roughly 
resonate at the appropriate freq with a fixed cap. Use a tap at the 
first turn for the output. You need a gap somewhere in the shield or it 
becomes a shorted turn. My Octoloop (see Google) contains two or three 
turns of CAT-5 wired in series. Signals and atmospheric noise are strong 
down there so you probably don't need to be sharply tuned or use an 
amplifier. If you can hear 'spherics rather than buzz you're making progress
