Subject: [Milsurplus] APG-5 - bring it back alive?
I have an APG-5 antenna in its antenna "pod,"
as well as a junction box. I have a display I *think* is
for it as well. It all finally came out of storage.
It's not for BTO:
--------------------
AN/APG-5
Radar set, Gun laying, Automatic range finder, 2.5 GHz, Pulse,
range 150-3000 yards, used on B-17 and B-24.
-------------------------
>From an AAF list, talking about sights on the ball turrents:
jpeters140 -> RE: Need manuals/schematics for Sperry K4 computing gunsight
for lower ball turret B17 (7/30/2006 3:52:08 PM)
Ken....The two sights K-3 and K-4 wre the same except for the
mounting....the double-ended DC motor and the two Vickers Variable
Displacement.(Wobble) Hydraulic Pumps were the same in both the Sperry Upper
Local and ball turrets...one pump worked the azimuth and the other worked
the elevation.
There was a modification of the two turrets with the addition of the
AN-APG-5 Radar kit that added six pressurized containers for the radar
equipment, an antenna, and a white indicating light to signify a target
acquisition, which then moved the sight reticles automatically, where on a
turret without the AN-APG-5 modification, the gunner had to manually move
the reticles...the upper turret gunner had to twist the right hand grip, and
the ball turret gunner had to lift his left foot to cause the reticles to
move.
-------------------------
The antenna pod is specifically built to be mounted along
a 50-caliber gun barrel on a bomber. I found a photo of the
installation on a ball-turrent years ago, but can't find it now.
It's a long dual-axis yagi inside a pressurized fiberglass tube
and is the very devil to get back in the holder once
you take it out. The antenna itself- about 2+ feet long-
is heavily plated in gold from end to end.
I'll bet there's half an ounce on this thing.
I could be talked into a good trade...
