Wilcox made 19 1/2 inch rack mount components for
their CS-390 TX/RX control positions for their 96C,
and these racks were used all over when I was in USAF.
The tone oscillator used a power transformer etc which
could be used to make a DC source to replace dynamotors.
Physical size was primary factor.   There was a lot of stuff
out there to do things with if one knew how to build things.
Real BC-211 AC supplies came along later.
