Now that is ironic. When Bay Bridge was selling the city council on
the shipbreaking plan, one of the "goodies" they mentioned was
"tours" of the ships, for some low entry fee ( and do i remember that
the fee was going to charity, or is that my imagination.....?? ) 
Basically, the area declined  their plan because of environmental concerns
and that it would be "mined out" and not a long-lasting  industry.
I understand MARAD pays the shipbreaker something like $200,000
per ship for them scrapping it, and of course they get the metal also.
I think that US law forbids sending the ships overseas now.
