I'm sure that a lot of the contracts with manufacturers during
WWII included provisos that covered the disposition of the
equipment at the end of the war. I know that on Enewetok
some heavy equipment was pushed out on the reef at low tide,
then the valve and other covers were removed. By 1951 the
crabs had moved in and that was something to hear. Also
saw a causeway made from 6X6 trucks there. On Okinawa
in the early 60's some of the locals would take a tug boat and
a barge out in the bay and recover a lot of iron, the the US
Marshals would come and run them away. I used to watch this,
real time.
