[Milsurplus] BC-342

I have yet another dilemma with my BC-610/BC-342 setup.  I use a speaker 
with the 342 instead of headphones and even with the antenna shorting 
relay operating properly I still get audio feedback from the speaker 
when I key the 610 at the proper modulation level.  I know the BC-342 
and 312 were used with a speaker in the SCR configurations, so, how did 
they prevent audio feedback?  I could use another relay to switch the 
speaker(s) off and direct the audio output to a sufficient load during 
transmit, but I don't recall that being used in the original setup.

Am I overlooking an obvious solution?  Any help and/or advise will be 
greatly appreciated.
