Perhaps to recreate with at least a little bit of accuracy the historical configuration of the aircraft??
I agree with Dave. WWII USAAF radio sets should be (and can *easily* be) complete. They don't need to be (and in my opinion should NOT be) actually operated. The SCR-287 and SCR-274-N radio sets shown are the easiest WWII radio systems of any country or service for which ALL the original and un-hacked components can still be found at reasonable prices, including connectors and MC-215 tuning splines.
In the B-17 example, the BC-348 has been hacked. It's missing the dial light control and has at least one extra hole/jack. The Morse key is the Bendix/USN MT-11 rather than the correct and very common J-37. There should be a MONITOR/NORMAL switch near the receiver. The radio operator table should not be plywood. Parts are missing from some of the SCR-274-N transmitters and receivers.
I wonder if they've done anything to "restore" the SCR-595/695 IFF, SCR-269 ADF, SCR-211 freq. meter, SCR-578 Gibson Girl, the RC-36 interphone, and the RC-43 marker beacon gear that should be on board. Likely an SCR-522 VHF AM set was also installed in the ETO. All this stuff is still pretty easy to find, if anyone really cared.
