The UK R.1155 / T.1154 used a roughly 9 V and roughly 18 V dyno  (for 12 and 24
V systems) with a dropping resistor. It was done so there would always be enough
voltage to run the dynos on their rated voltage.  The voltage was controlled by
a 'Londex' relay as I remember,
