My money says this GF/RU set is your best candidate, Robert.
I agree that GF/RUs were used... and I have documentation that the First and
Second Marine Divisions used them in 1 ton IHC M-2-4 trucks, 2 units per
Division from about mid 1943. These units were quote, "considered necessary for an
indefinite period during a landing operation and seizure of a beachhead in
connection with the operation of type MM Radio Transmitting and Receiving
Equipment."
I do not know specifically about the M3, but the other possibilities are the
TCS and SCR-608. These radios were used in the Navy/USMC radio jeeps. The
SCR-608 is more of a candidate as it could be placed in the CH-74 cabinet. The
jeep's TCS system and cabinet was not made in any kind of vehicle kit form until
almost the end of the war.
