I agree that GF/RUs were used... and I have documentation that the First and 
Second Marine Divisions used them in 1 ton IHC M-2-4 trucks, 2 units per 
Division from about mid 1943. These units were quote, "considered necessary for an 
indefinite period during a landing operation and seizure of a beachhead in 
connection with the operation of type MM Radio Transmitting and Receiving 
Equipment."

I do not know specifically about the M3, but the other possibilities are the 
TCS and SCR-608. These radios were used in the Navy/USMC radio jeeps. The 
SCR-608 is more of a candidate as it could be placed in the CH-74 cabinet. The 
jeep's TCS system and cabinet was not made in any kind of vehicle kit form until 
almost the end of the war.
