The new R-134 refrigerant is considerably less efficient than R-12 or R-22. 
However, it's far less of a threat to the ozone layer.  And, yes, it does 
take more power to move the same number of BTU's as R-12/22.

Therefore, more nasties from power plants and engine exhausts (and lower 
fuel mileage for air conditioned motor vehicles).

The "scientific logic" is curiously similar to the case for all-electric 
vehicles.  Batteries are notoriously inefficient at storing and releasing 
electric energy; not to mention the added losses in getting electricity from 
the power plant to the battery charger, which also results in more nasties 
from the power generating station.

But it's politically correct.  ACK!!!
