[Milsurplus] Freon vs CO2

Correct, the chloroflourocarbon Freons break up and release chlorine ions 
which catalytically break up ozone.  The replacement refrigerants eliminated 
the chlorine in an effort to mitigate the problem.  Also, it is now required 
to recover refrigerants when servicing systems; previously they were simply 
vented to the atmosphere.  The reduction of the ozone layer is responsible 
for the increased UV radiation and skin cancer incidence.

Carbon dioxide, methane and other "greenhouse" gases act to trap heat in the 
atmosphere.  This is the "global warming" that is discussed.  The danger of 
global warming is NOT the few degrees increase in average temperature but 
the increase in energy in the atmosphere.  The energy is proportional to the 
square of the temperature and the entire system is one based on a large 
number of factors in close balance.  Increasing the energy in the system 
results in greater excursions from the average, such as colder winters, 
hotter summers, stronger and more frequent storms, and shifting "sweet 
spots" where agriculture is most efficient.
