Don-

Phil Ferrell, now K7PF, and I were Lts. together in the Communications
Directorate at RADC (Rome Air Development Center, part of then Air Research
and Development Command) at that time. He had just completed his SSB flight
on loan with SAC and went on to develop "Constant Amplitude Speech", a
method of clipping and filtering speech at RF or IF frequencies and
translating the result back to baseband for modulation of SSB transmitters,
thereby negating the distortion products that were present in baseband
clipping. (I was doing other SSB research at the time.) Phil's technique is
of course widely repeated and used today, but unfortunately with little
reference to his pioneering work. He may have also used a version of his
processor on that historic flight. Phil and I were also active in AF MARS at
the time, and we both went on to PhDs in EE. We used to have some wonderful
"discussions" on the relative merit of certain schools, since he was from
Cal Tech and I from MIT!

Grif, KF4JG
