The equipment was KWS-1 and 75A4 that were used in the test and the test was
conducted on 143.5 khz on and around July 2 1956 with the SAC C97 flying
from Thule AB to Anchoragfe to Travis to Offutt to Andrews to Mitchell to
portsmouth AFB to Loring to Harmond to Goosebay to Thule. Over 1200 contacts
were made on the 10,000 mile trip in the US and 24 foreign countries. This
included all continents including Antartica and Ross Island Operation
Deepfreeze.
The call letters were W0CXX/M. The equipment operated from the 115 vac 400
cps generators on board the aircraft, using a fixed 25 foot antenna end fed.
Hams on board the aircraft were Maj. Gen. "Butch" Grizwold K0DWC; Lt. P.J.
"Phil" Ferrell, W7PUG; Leo Meyerson, W0GFQ; and Art COllins, W0CXX. Col.
Jack Bestic, cheif of SAC communications/electronics also assisted on the
trip.
I have the original QSL received from contacting the operation on July 2,
1956 at 2221 Z with the KWS-1 that is sitting in the shack awaiting
refurbishment..
Healthfully yours,
DON W4BWS
