You probably should have used a custom-fit crate made out of 3/4" plywood,
glued and deck-screwed together. (BTW, I am saying this in jest). Remember
the 400 lub go-rillas? :-) But, did UPS pay for the damage noted above? If
not, they sure should have.

Come, come. Let's be reasonable: of course not. I was, of course, talking
about NORMAL destruction and mayhem. Not "acts of God."

That depends, of course, on what you understand by "normal handling".
Some of us think that, to the shippers, "normal handling" means beating the
crap out of it on a routine basis, and we pack accordingly.

Absolutely right. And I don't care for the way some of the shippers try to
weasle out of paying due compensation either. So I try to make sure that I
don't have to go after them for it.
In the meantime, I am going to remember Hank Arney's suggestion of taking
them to small-claims court if necessary.
